Pinkerton Steve
From Frank Clynes, Dec 18, 2016

I remember when Vance decided to hire a Pinkerton security guard to be his evening receptionist. I reminded Vance there was a Pinkerton man guarding the president's box at the Ford Theater, the night Lincoln was shot. He was not amused.

Pinkerton detective Steve told us he was a POW in Germany during WWII. Attached to a general's staff in France, his function was that of Procurer. It was his duty to proceed ahead of the column and secure the best hotel accommodations in the next village, for the American general and his staff.

He was attempting to do that in one small town, when the maitre'd of the establishment told him the Hotel was still occupied by a German general's staff. Looking around the lobby, he noticed German officers sitting in the lounge. One officer invited him to their table, bought him a glass of wine and placed him under arrest.

Back to the WTEV lobby: As a professional army alcoholic, Steve had mastered the art of sleeping on the job while sitting up straight. Many a night we'd see him passed out at the switchboard, holding a book. Some clown in the news department put a sign in front of him that read, "Do Not Disturb."
