Submitted By Les Brown (Feb 28, 2004) Lee Tanner long suspected that one engineer in particular, (who shall remain nameless), wasn't doing any work at all, just sleeping through his midnight shift. That wasn't entirely true. The engineer only slept from sign-off to a half hour before sign-on. He shared the couch on Bassett's "Community" set with his small, very friendly dog (also sleep-addicted). Tanner sneaked in at about 3am and mounted a search. It didn't take him long to find the engineer and the dog. Didn't wake 'em...just took a time-exposure picture for evidence. Next day Tanner confronted Bob Palmer (the union shop steward). "I found (so-and-so) at three this morning, sleeping with a dog on the couch in the studio." "He's fired!" Palmer asked, "Who was she? Is SHE fired, too?" Tanner raised his eyes toward the ceiling and stalked away. There was some kind of discipline but the arbitrators were so busy laughing at the "is SHE...." part that it amounted to a slap on the wrist and an admonition to keep the dog out of the station. |
