Written by: Peter Q. George Whitman, Massachusetts 2/27/2004 Found on a website discussing WTEV in Jacksonville Just saw some new postings on the WTEV/6 "Due To Circumstances Beyond Our Control" website One in particular, "Sister Busy Hands", is rather funny ;)! It's good to see that "The Chef" is finally updating the webpage. For those of you who don't know about the former WTEV (Channel 6) in New Bedford, MA (1963-1981), it is known today as WLNE-TV with studios in Providence, RI. To many people, WTEV was the "WKRP" of Southern New England television. Sure, they were always dead last in the ratings, mainly due to a sub-par signal in the Greater Providence ADI, among other things. To the other network affiliates (WPRI and WJAR) in the market, it was called "that little station from New Bedford". In spite of their lower stature, they had some great people over the years, namely the late Bob Bassett, Truman Taylor, Ben Schneider and many more. Playing the part of "Arthur Carlson" was the late Vance Eskersley, "Andy Travis" would be probably be Lee Tanner, "Les Nessman" would probably be Jack Delaney...... well, you can make your own similarities. When you saw Providence television (on 10 and 12), you would see well groomed, picture perfect (everybody likes me....) anchors. On Channel 6, you saw people you would consider to be your peers. They seemed more at home and more real. If you haven't had a chance to visit the website, by all means do. Guaranteed you will have a smile on your face, especially with the stories written by that famous WTEV personality, the late Bob Bassett. If I were old enough to work at WTEV back in the 1960's and 70's, I probably would have had quite a time there! WTEV, ....they sure don't make them like THAT anymore! 73, Peter Q.
