Submitted By Les Brown (Mar 4, 2004) The studio had two cameras, both RCA TK-41's (400 pounds each) which had been discarded by "mother station", WGAL (Lancaster, PA). One camera had a green "gun" (vidicon) which cut out occasionally, making all the colors wrong. It seemed to like failing during the weekly taping of The Sunday Mass. Louie Martin, the carpenter, solved the problem. He fabricated a "stained glass window" out of wood and colored cellophane which included lots of reds and blues but NO greens. When the camera failed during The Mass, the operator (usually Buddy Koster) would pan over to the "window" so it could be used as a cover shot while the remaining camera was moved around as needed. Over time there came to be a green "X" taped to one spot on the camera. Buddy learned that once he got focused on the window he could walk around the camera (a pretty darned good hike) and whack the "X" with his fist. 9 times out of 10 the green came back! |
