from Jon Foley (Nov 21, 2004)

Hal, I, and a few others went out to dinner after the 6pm news at Jimmy Connors' restaurant in downtown New Bedford. We all had a couple of drinks or so, then returned to the studio. When it was time for the 11pm news, the director, who I think was Dave Langevin, decided that Hal was not in shape to run audio for the news, and refused to start with Hal in the audio booth. Hal, insisting he was in good shape (and, actually, he was), refused to leave the booth. 11 o'clock came and went, and those of us in the studio didn't know why we hadn't started. When we were told, I ran upstairs to try to talk Hal out of the booth, since I was a friend of his. He let me in, we talked for a while, but I was unsuccessful in convincing him to leave. I said to him, "You know what this means, don't you?" He said he did, we shook hands and I wished him luck, and left the booth with him still in it.

I recall that we hung on a slide for the half hour the news was supposed to be on.

The next day he was fired.

Hal ended up in San Diego, and I believe I heard he had died, although I'm not sure of that. I hope it's not true.
