from Frank Clynes: How can I describe Jack Delaney? He was the WTEV news director for a time, although his talent leaned more towards newspaper and radio. His resume included reporting for Stars and Stripes, the New Bedford Standard Times, the Providence Journal, and for years was the WNBH radio news director. He could type and compile stories from the AP and UPI faster than any man alive. But having said that, I have no idea what it was about television that attracted him. I have found that most people who work in television possess a certain hard-to-define fire in their belly and a highly competitive attitude, combined with a driving ambition to push the envelope. This type of people irritated Jack to no end. He passionately hated news meetings, especially when they were conducted by the general manager who also possessed that same fire. He also had no sense of humor, an absolute necessity to survive at WTEV. Even from his early youth, Jack seemed somehow destined to become a manager. | |
