Watermelon Skin Wallpaper
from Les Brown Apr 26, 2022

During the time of the rioting in NB, Charlie Jenkins got married to Candy Kocevar who had also worked at WTEV. A lovely young lady - she and my wife Paula came to be good friends.

They had rented an apartment that needed serious cosmetic work. As a wedding present Candy, Paula and I worked out that we'd do the painting and papering to make it look nice. Jenkins was aware of it but was kept away until it was done.

First off, there was a brick chimney through the middle of the living room. We made it invisible. Painted it flat black and hung on each surface a black on white lines - only etching in shiny black frames.

Everybody noticed the etchings, nobody noticed the chimney!

But in the same room we papered three walls in a delicate white-on-white patterned wallpaper and the fourth wall in green with horizontal black random traces.

When Jenkins saw it he cracked up and swore he'd get me someday for having put WATERMELON skin on his living room wall.

That stemmed from a trip we had made to Blackey's Kosher Deli in Mattapan for knishes. It was buffet style with all kinds of ethnic goodies and, the season being just right, thick slices of watermelon. Jenks drooled, but wouldn't take one because of the stereotype. Candy went up and brought one back to him.

He got me back for it with him taking us to a church dinner at St. Daddy Grace's down the street from the apartment. The whole placed was in on what he was doing and I got little to eat other than collard greens.

Damn I miss him!

Ask Frank why Jenkins always wore a black knitted watch cap in his later days...
