Cardinal Cushing Stops By
From Frank Clynes, Jul 7, 2017

Next door to WTEV-6 is the venerable old Grace Episcopal Church, constructed in the Gothic style. In the early 6o's, it's new pastor, Reverend Philip Douglas was a man fifty years ahead of his time.

He suggested to his board of deacons, to occasionally invite clergymen of other faiths to preach at their Sunday service. They all thought that was a grand idea and approved. A few weeks later they learned to their horror, that Douglas had sent an invitation to Richard Cardinal Cushing of Boston. And worse, that he had accepted! Nothing like this had ever happened in America. Rev. Douglas asked Vance Eckersley if channel 6 would agree to televise it live. Absolutely!

On the day of the Cardinals appearance on the Anglican pulpit, Grace Church was packed to capacity. Episcopalians who hadn't been inside the building since their baptism, were in attendance. And those who couldn't get in, watched it on tv. Television makes for a bully pulpit.
