Buddy Koster

Obituary

Buddy Henry Koster, 78, of New Bedford, died Monday, June 4, 2001, at St. Luke's Hospital due to complications. He was the husband of Annette (Daniels) Koster; they were married for 52 years.

Born in Narrowsburg, N.Y., the son of the late Henry and Mildred (Buck) Koster, he lived in New Bedford for the past 40 years. He was a communicant of St. Joseph-St. Therese Church. He graduated from the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, N.Y. with a bachelor's degree in music.

Mr. Koster was employed by Channel 6 as a cameraman/projectionist for 27 years until his retirement.

Previously, he had a 17-piece orchestra working out of New York City and the Midwest. He had his first big band while serving in the Navy at Norfolk, Va. in 1943. For two decades he traveled as a trumpet-playing maestro throughout the United States and beyond. He made recordings and in 1951, his band was rated among the nation's "Top 20" in the music trade's bible, Downbeat magazine. A story on Mr. Koster and his big band experience was printed in The Standard-Times on March 15, 1970.

He served in the Navy during World War II and the Korean War. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Poirier Post.

Survivors include his widow; three sons, Brian Koster of Stroudsburg, Pa., Russell Koster of Lakeville and Ronald Koster of New Bedford; a daughter, Susan J. Koster of Acushnet; seven grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.
